Applying to the UConn Geography Graduate Program
Admissions Requirements

The admission requirements for the University of Connecticut, including GRE  requirements are given at the following site:  http://grad.uconn.edu/prospective/admission_requirements.html.

Because our Geography Department faculty emphasize quantitative research, the quantitative portion of the GRE is an important metric in the application review process.

International students note: The university requires the TOEFL for all foreign students for whom English is not the primary language. The TOEFL requirements are listed in the admission requirements link given above.

Application Deadlines

To be considered for fall semester admission, completed applications must be received by the Graduate School no later than February 1.

Applications received at other times during the year are held for the next annual review.  Students seeking admission without need of departmental funding can request the application be reviewed for admission outside the normal cycle.

Admission & Funding Decisions

The Geography Department reviews applications in February for fall admissions and applicants are notified in early March.   Admission decisions are independent of funding decisions.

Funding decisions are made in April, and based on availability of funding through the University and other sources.  Note that we provide funding (via teaching assistantships) primarily to students applying to the PhD program.

Graduate Program Description

The MA and PhD program descriptions are in the Graduate Catalog for which there are University level requirements http://catalog.grad.uconn.edu/sadr/sadr-page9.html#crd and Departmental requirements http://catalog.grad.uconn.edu/fos/geo.html.

Department level requirements may be modified at the discretion of the student's Advisory Committee.

GIS Graduate Certificate

Students who have completed a bachelor's degree are welcome to complete the graduate course work for the GIS Certificate.  Course work from the PhD program can be used for the GIS Certificate, where applicable.
